    BULGARIAN MICHAEL ZHELEV SCORED A CONVINCING WIN IN THE THREE THOUSAND METRES STEEPLECHASE AT THE WORLD GAMES ATHLETIC MEETING IN HELSINKI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). ZHELEV WON BY FOUR SECONDS FROM BRITAIN'S GERRY STEVENS WITH WILLI WAGNER OF WEST GERMANY THIRD.

    AMOS BIWOTT, KENYAN HOLDER OF THE OLYMPIC 3,000 METRES STEEPLECHASE TITLE FINISHED SIXTH.

    A CROWD OF 15 THOUSAND WATCHED THE SECOND NIGHT'S EVENTS IN THE TWO-DAY MEETING.

    THE 800 METRES WAS WON BY KENYA'S NAFTALI BON FROM ALBERTO ESTEBAN OF SPAIN AND MARKKU AALTO OF FINLAND. BON'S WINNING TIME WAS 1 MINUTE 49.5 SECONDS.

    ETHIOPIA'S SOLOMON BELAYE WON THE 100 METRES IN 10.6 SECONDS FROM CHARLES ASATI OF KENYA WITH OLE SKAARSTEIN OF NORWAY THIRD. ASATI AND SKAARSTEIN BOTH CLOCKED 10.7 SECONDS.

    BRITAIN'S RON HILL WON THE 10 THOUSAND METRES, AFTER A BRAWLING RACE.

    DURING THE RACE HE WAS JOSTLED BY ETHIOPIAN RUNNERS WOHIB MASRESHA AND FIKRU DEGUEFU, BUT BATTLED ON TO VICTORY IN 28 MINUTES 40.6 SECONDS.

    BELGIAN GASTON ROELANTS, THE WORLD 20,000 METRES RECORD HOLDER BRIEFLY DROPPED OUT OF THE RACE IN PROTEST AGAINST THE TACTICS OF THE ETHIOPIAN RUNNERS. BUT HE REJOINED THE RACE AND SOON CAUGHT THE MAIN GROUP.

    MASRESHA, DEGUEFU AND A THIRD ETHIOPIAN, MAMO WOLDE, LODGED A PROTEST AFTER THE RACE THAT HILL HAD PUSHED THEM. IT WAS REJECTED.

    THE CHAPTER OF INCIDENTS ENDED AMICABLY WITH HILL SHAKING HANDS WITH THE ETHIOPIANS.
