  • Description

The views of two European countries were heard at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday (11 April) in a special debate on the problems of raw materials and economic development
The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Mr. Max van der Stoel, in his address, cautioned other developed nations against opting for all-out economic self-sufficiency as the answer to high commodities prices and shortages. Mr. vander Stoel, whose country is still a target of the Arab oil embargo, said recent events had brought home dramatically the realities of interdependence. His solution was a policy of world co-operation.

The Belgian Ambassador, Edouard Longestaey, who also spoke on Thursday, the third day of the special session, urged "more appropriate ways" of enabling the developing countries to take part in the expansion of world trade in a more balanced manner. Interdependence and solidarity was also his theme. A translation of Mr. Longerstaey's French speech follows:
The present crisis, Ambassador Longerstaey said, threatened mainly those who lived on the brink of human degradation. They had the right to demand that the U.N. 's deliberation would not be in vain.
