    THE 20TH. ANNIVERSARY OF GHANA NATIONAL COLLEGE, CAPE COAST, WAS MARKED LAST SATURDAY (FEBRUARY 3). THE ANNUAL SPEECH DAY OF THE COLLEGE COINCIDED WITH THE ANNIVERSARY. PRESENT WERE HUNDREDS OF GUESTS INCLUDING THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CENTRAL REGION OF ADMINISTRATION, BRIGADIER CRABBE. SPEAKERS INCLUDED THE CHIEF EDUCATION OFFICER OF THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, MR. J.W. MILLS, THE COLLEGE'S HEADMASTER, MR. J.J. MENSAH-KANE, AND THE PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, REVERED PROFESSOR C.G. BAETA.

    PROFESSOR BAETA URGED GHANAIANS TO "DEVELOP A SPIRIT OF DEEPER RESPONSIBILITY." HE SAID THAT EDUCATION WITHOUT CHRISTIAN UNDERSTANDING WAS USELESS. MR. MENSAH-KANE APPEALED TO THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO PLACE MORE EMPHASIS ON SCIENCE EDUCATION IN GHANA. HE SAID THE COUNTRY HAD REACHED A STAGE WHERE EVERYONE "WANTS TO HAVE A DOCTOR, AN ENGINEER OR A SCIENTIST IN HIS FAMILY."
    MR. WILLS, WHO WAS CHAIRMAN FOR THE OCCASION, TOLD THE STUDENTS THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO STUDY HARD TO BECOME USEFUL CITIZENS OF THE FUTURE. HE SAID THAT TO UNDERSTAND EDUCATION INVOLVED THE DEVELOPMENT OF TALENT NOT MERELY LEARNING WHAT WAS TAUGHT. LATER MRS. ESTER CRABBE, WIFE OF BRIGADIER CRABBE, PRESENTED PRIZES TO OUTSTANDING STUDENTS AT THE COLLEGE.
