Background: MANY SARAWAKIANS TURNED UP AT THE KUCHING HARBOUR ON OCTOBER 23 TO BID BON VOYAGE TO BRITAIN'S FIRST BATTALION, THE GREENJACKETS, WHO SAILED FOR MALAYA AFTER THEIR THIRD TOUR OF DUTY IN SARAWAK ASSISTING MALAYSIAN FORCES IN FIGHTING AGAINST INDONESIAN INSURGENTS.

THE GREENJACKETS WHO HAVE BEEN IN SARAWAK FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, WILL SAIL FOR BRITAIN IN JANUARY NEXT YEAR. THEY WERE AMONG THE FIRST BRITISH TROOPS DISPATCHED TO THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE OF BRUNEI, NORTHWEST OF SARAWAK IN 1962 TO HELP PUT DOWN THE REBELLION AGAINST THE SULTAN'S GOVERNMENT.

ON THE EVE OF THEIR DEPARTURE, TWO MEMBERS OF THE GREENJACKETS WERE KILLED WHILE CARRYING OUT DEMOLITION WORK NEAR THE INDONESIAN BORDER IN SARAWAK'S FIRST DIVISION.

A BAND OF THE SARAWAK POLICE CONSTABULARY WAS IN ATTENDANCE, BUT THE LOUDEST CHEERS WERE GIVEN TO THE PIPES AND DRUMS OF THE FIRST BATTALION, SEVENTH GURKHA RIFLES.

CHEERS AND MUSIC WERE DROWNED BY THE ROAR OF TURBO JET ENGINES OF FOUR BELVEDERE HELICOPTERS OF 60 SQUADRON, ROYAL AIR FORCE, WHICH FLEW PAST IN FORMATION -- AN UNEXPECTED TRIBUTE TO THE GREENJACKETS.
