    The Central Committee of the ruling Congolese Labour Party met in Brazzaville, capital of the People's Republic of the Congo on Friday (8 June) under the chairmanship of President Marian Ngouabi to draw up a list of candidates for the June 24 General Elections.

    The General Elections wild be the first to be held in the country for nine years.

    Nearly 6,000 candidates have been suggested by the different regions, sub-regions and communes for well over 1,000 legislative and administrative posts.

    The elections will simultaneously be a referendum for the new Constitution which was adopted by the last Congress of the ruling Congolese Workers Party in December 1972.

    The election campaigns were officially opened on saturday (9 June) by President Ngouabi.
