  • Description

THE WALLS OF A PARTY DEMOLISHED FIVE-STOREY BUILDING COLLAPSED TWICE AROUND FIREMEN DURING A HUGE BLAZE IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, ON THURSDAY. FIRE SWEPT THROUGH THE FORMER BUCKINGHAM'S DEPARTMENT STORE, SETTING FIRE TO AN ADJACENT HOTEL AND BLISTERING THE PAINT OF FIRE APPLIANCES.

THE BUILDING WAS IN THE COURSE OF DEMOLITION WHEN THE FIRE BEGAN. WATCHED BY A CROWD OF UP TO 10,000, FLAMES QUICKLY LEAPT THROUGH THE STRICKEN BUILDING AND A HUGE COLUMN OF SMOKE ROSE HIGH ABOVE IT, VISIBLE UP TO EIGHTY MILES (128 KMS) AWAY. THE AREA WAS GRADUALLY EVACUATED, AND FIREMEN MOVED IN.

A SERIES OF EXPLOSIONS, BELIEVED TO BE ERUPTING OXY-ACETYLENE CYLINDERS, ROCKED THE BUILDING SHORTLY BEFORE THE WALLS COLLAPSED. GUSTS OF HEAT FROM THE BLAZE COULD BE FELT HALF A MILE AWAY - AND FIREMEN SPRAYED WATER ONTO OTHER FIREMEN WHO WERE MANNING HOSES NEAR THE BUILDING. EVEN THE PAINTWORK ON FIRE-ENGINES WAS BADLY BLISTERED.

SECTIONS OF THE WALL WRECKED A SMALL STATION WAGON PARKED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING, AND SHOWERED AROUND FIREMEN. BUT ALTHOUGH AMBULANCEMEN WERE ON HAND, NONE OF THE FIRE-FIGHTERS WAS INJURED.
