A national tragedy has been averted in Kenya. Reports that Brutus the Lion was to?

  • Description

A national tragedy has been averted in Kenya. Reports that Brutus the Lion was to be put down after 23 years as the country's most famous animal have been denied by the Director of Kenya National Parks, Mr. Perez Olindo: "Brutus will be allowed to live a normal life and die a normal death. We have no intention of putting him down."
The day of reprieve for Brutus, whose only crime was old age, came yesterday (Friday) when he was moved from the new animal orphanage to the old orphanage in Nairobi, where visitors are not allowed. Although old and tired with ribs showing, it took thirteen men and a dead rabbit to move Brutus - a final reminder of the grand days when Brutus starred in many films, including the famous "Born Free."
SYNOPSIS: This proud beast is Brutus, Kenya's most famous lion. He starred in many feature films, including one of the best-known animal films of them all - Born Free. That was in the past. Now, Brutus is 23 years old, thin, haggard and tired.....and rumours that Brutus was to be put down, his only crime being old age, met with a furious response from his many friends. But his life has now been guaranteed. He's to be moved to a peaceful place to live out his life. If he can be moved.

Mr. Ngethe, the game warden at the new animal orphanage in Nairobi, supervised the efforts to move Brutus last Friday. The bait was finally seized by Brutus and he entered his cage. There he could be treated for wounds he received fighting with another lion.

Brutus, once happily installed in his cage, was loaded onto a lorry and taken to his new home, free of tourists, where he will live out the rest of his life in peace. At the animal orphanage Brutus the Lion will be just another old age pensioner.

The fears of Brutus' many friends disappeared when the Director of Kenya's National Parks, Mr. Perez Olindo, said recently: "Brutus will be allowed to live a normal life and die a normal death. We have no intention at all of putting him down." Instead, Brutus the Lion will have the company of his own kind, for as long as he lasts.
