    The West African state of Cameroun has celebrated the 12th anniversary of independence from France.

    The event was marked by a huge parade on Saturday (1 January) through Unification Square in the capital, Yaounde.

    Guest of honour was the Head of State, President Ahidjo.

    SYNOPSIS: President Ahidjo of Cameroun salutes the flag at the beginning of ceremonies marking the 12th anniversary of his country's independence from France. The ceremonies took place in Unification Square -- centre of the Camerouns capital, Yaounde. After inspecting a guard of honour, the President drove to the dais -- where he joined senior members of the government, and diplomatic representatives to watch a huge parade. It was the first engagement for the President in what was to be a busy day. Later he was to have a meeting with government members, receive various groups wishing to offer New Year greetings -- and meet the diplomatic corps.

    The procession -- watched by thousands of people -- was designed to reflect life in Cameroun. Military units took pride of place -- the various services represented by marching men in traditional uniforms.

    Wearing orthodox military uniforms -- a party carrying the flag of Cameroun.

    Mounted troops also took part -- to be followed by a parade of army vehicles. Cameroun has an army consisting of three battalions. These vehicles come from the well-equipped armoured squadron. Most aid for Cameroun comes from France -- with whom the country still enjoys friendly relations.

    For the Army commander -- personal congratulations from the President.

    Civilian groups made up the rest of the parade. They included smartly dressed squads from various women's organisations The anniversary has become a major annual event in Cameroun.
