    Runners from countries in Europe and North Africa took part in the third international cross-country run at Algiers on Saturday (8 January).

    There were four races on the programme--each for a different grade. Most interest was in the 9,000-metre race for senior runners.

    Finishing first and second in the race were two East Germans, Wilfreid Scholz and Jurgen Busch.

    A Tunisian athlete, Cherif Hanachi was third.

    SYNOPSIS: Competitors assembled in Algiers on Saturday for the major event in a day of athletics at the Algiers Hippodrome. The event is the nine-thousand metre cross-country race for senior runners. It was the climax of a day on which three other cross-country events had been run, one for girls and two for junior men. The senior race was a truly international event--with runners from countries in Europe and North Africa taking part.

    First across the line--Wilfreid Scholz of East Germany.

    He was followed in by fellow-countryman Jurgen Busch.

    The race was a triumph for the East Germans who were warmly applauded by the large crowd.

    The third place-getter was Cherif Hanachi of Tunisia, who added his congratulations to the East Germans.
