Background: Dr. Roberto Guyer, the United Nations Under-Secretary General for special political affairs, arrived in Nicosia on sunday (30 January) for discussions on resumption of the deadlocked talks for settlement of the conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Dr. Guyer said on arrival that he hoped for an early resumption of the talks within the framework of the proposals made by former U.N. Secretary-General U Thant last December.

Foreign Minister Kyprianou met Dr. Guyer at the airport, and both men met again for talks the following day (Monday 31 January). Later that afternoon, the party went on to meet the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, for further discussions.
