Background: THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) STARTED AN OPERATION TO FREE 15 FOREIGN SHIPS TRAPPED IN THE SUEZ CANAL SINCE LAST YEAR'S ARAB-ISRAELI WAR.

THREE TUGS, OPERATING OUT OF ISMAILIA, BEGAN AN EXPLORATION OF THE BED OF THE CANAL IN THE FIRST STAGE OF THE CLEARANCE OPERATION WHICH IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT THREE WEEKS.

FOURTEEN OF THE VESSELS ARE IN THE GREAT BITTER LAKE IN THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE CANAL. THE 15TH, THE AMERICAN SHIP OBSERVER, IS FURTHER NORTH IN THE LAKE TIMSAH.

THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO MOVE OUT BECAUSE OF FOUR EGYPTIAN VESSELS SUNK IN THE CANAL DURING THE SIX DAY WAR.

APART FROM THE UNITED STATES, THE SHIPS COME FROM BRITAIN, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY, SWEDEN, POLAND, INDIA, BULGARIA AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
