  • Description

General Franco of Spain emerged from seclusion on Saturday (Dec. 22) to attend a memorial church service for the assassinated Spanish Prime Minister, Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco.

The 81-year-old head of state, left the Pardo Palace on the outskirts of Madrid, the capital, to attend the service at the Church of Saint Francis the Great in central Madrid.

General Franco did not attend the funeral service for Admiral Carrero Blanco, his trusted assistant for more than 30 years. Officials said General Franco had a mild bout of influenza.

The memorial service was also attended by the King-designate, Prince Juan Carlos, the interim President, Senor Torcuato Fernandez Miranda, Cabinet ministers and leading officials.

A big crowd gathered outside the church to cheer General Franco. Police and security guards held them back, and took up positions on surrounding rooftops.

Admiral Carrero Blanco was killed on Thursday when a bomb, believed to have been planted by members of the Basque Separatist organisation, blew up under his car in central Madrid. Three days of official mourning was declared.
