    FORMER NIGERIAN PRESIDENT DR NNAMADI AZIKIWE FLEW INTO LAGOS FROM LONDON YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AND PROMISED THAT HE WOULD WORK TOWARDS "HEALING OLD WOUNDS" BETWEEN FEDERAL NIGERIA AND BREAKAWAY BIAFRA.

    DR AZIKIWE WAS MET AT IKEJA AIRPORT BY A GROUP OF FEDERAL COMMISSIONERS (MINISTERS), INCLUDING REAR-ADMIRAL WEY, HEAD OF THE NIGERIAN NAVY, AND CHIEF ENAHORO. COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION. WITH DR AZIKIWE WAS HIS SON AYODELE.

    NIGERIAN TROOPS FORMED A GUARD OF HONOUR FOR THE RETURN OF THE 65-YEAR-OLD FORMER PRESIDENT. DR AZIKIWE TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT HE HOPED BROTHER WILL NO LONGER SLAY BROTHER.

    DR AZIKIWE, ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THE IBO TRIBE, SUPPORTED BIAFRA AT THE TIME OF SECESSION IN MAY 1967, AND IN SUBSEQUENT MONTHS ACTED AS BIAFRAN REPRESENTATIVE IN VARIOUS FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

    HIS RECENT SUPPORT FOR A UNITED NIGERIA, HOWEVER, HAS BROUGHT HIM DENUNCIATIONS FROM THE BIAFRAN REGIME AS A "DEFECTOR". THE BIAFRANS CLAIM, HE HAS CHANGED SIDES BECAUSE HE BELIEVED BIAFRA HAS LOST THE WAR.

    IN LAGOS DR AZIKIWE SAID ONE OF HIS PURPOSES IN COMING BACK TO NIGERIA WAS TO CALL ON THE IBOS TO JOIN IN A RETURN TO ONE NATION. "LET US FORGET THE PAST", HE SAID.

    DR AZIKIWE SAID HE HAD BEEN ASSURED BY A NUMBER OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING THE FEDERAL LEADER MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, THAT THERE WAS ROOM FOR IBOS AND NON-IBOS TO LIVE TOGETHER IN ONE NIGERIA. LATER DR AZIKIWE WENT TO VISIT GENERAL GOWON FOR TALKS ON THE CIVIL WAR.

    ANSWERING PRESS QUESTIONS, DR AZIKIWE SAID HE KNEW OF AT LEAST 50 PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN KILLED AND MANY OTHERS PUT INTO DETENTION CAMPS FOR DISAGREEING WITH THE BIAFRAN LEADER, GENERAL OJUKU.
