  • Description

A UNITED STATES NAVY CRUSADER JET FIGHTER CRASHED ON THE TOKYO SUBURB OF HARAMACHIDA ON SUNDAY, (5 APRIL), KILLING 4 PEOPLE AND INJURING 27 OTHERS. THE IMPACT DESTROYED 12 HOUSES AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO SCORES OF OTHERS.

THE PILOT OF THE AIRCRAFT BAILED OUT AND LANDED ON A PARKED CAR NOT FAR FROM WHERE HIS PLANE PLOUGHED INTO THE GROUND, CARVING OUT A CRATER 15 FEET (5 METRES) DEEP AND 50 FEET (18 METRES) WIDE.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING AT 5 THOUSAND FEET (4,450 METRES), WHEN THE PILOT APPARENTLY LOST CONTROL OF HIS MACHINE. AS IT NOSED TOWARDS THE GROUND HE USED HIS EJECTOR SEAT AND PARACHUTED DOWN, SUSTAINING ONLY BRUISES AND CUTS WHEN HE LANDED. HE WAS LATER TAKEN TO THE U.S. NAVY HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT.

AS THE PILOTLESS PLANE HIT THE GROUND IT INSTANTLY DEMOLISHED TWO HOUSES, KILLING THE FOUR OCCUPANTS. TEN OTHER HOUSES WERE DESTROYED BY FIRE AS THE PLANE BURST INTO FLAMES. MOST OF THOSE INJURED WERE HURT BY FLYING DEBRIS AND GLASS.

RIOT SQUAD POLICE WERE SENT IN TO HELP THE FIRE BRIGADE AND AMBULANCE TEAMS RUSHED TO THE SPOT. THEY HAD TO WORK WELL INTO THE NIGHT SIFTING THROUGH THE WRECKAGE FOR THE BODIES OF THE DEAD AND SOME OF THE INJURED, BURIED UNDER THE TWISTED REMAINS OF THEIR HOMES.
