    FOLLOWING RENEWED CLASHES BETWEEN JORDANIAN GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND PALESTINIAN GUERRILLAS IN AMMAN AND IN THE NORTHERN CITY OF IRBID, UNEASY CALM REIGNED IN THE CAPITAL AS THE MAJORITY OF SHOPS AND BUSINESSES REMAINED CLOSED AND MANY PEOPLE STAYED HOME. IN IRBID ITSELF, OFFICIALS DISPLAYED A LARGE CACHE OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION TAKEN FROM THE GUERRILLAS - INCLUDING LAND MINES, BAZOOKAS, SHELLS. CASUALTY FIGURES FOR THE SATURDAY-SUNDAY FIGHTING ARE CONFLICTING - AMMAN REPORTS SAY THERE WERE 20 DEAD AND 20 INJURED; EL FATAH SOURCES SAID THERE WERE 70 KILLED AND HUNDREDS INJURED.

    WITH THE JORDANIAN ARMY APPARENTLY IN CONTROL - GUERRILLA LEADER YASSER ARAFAT IS REPORTED TO HAVE SENT MESSAGES TO EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT SADAT ASKING FOR ARAB MASS SUPPORT FOR THE PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE FORCES.

    SYNOPSIS: LIFE IN THE JORDANIAN CAPITAL OF AMMAN IS CALM - ON THE SURFACE. BUT CLASHES DURING THE WEEKEND BETWEEN GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND THE PALESTINIAN GUERRILLAS IN THE CAPITAL AND IN THE NORTHERN CITY OF IRBID, HAVE LEFT A STRAINED UNEASE - REFLECTED IN THE NUMBER OF CARS AND PEOPLE IN THE USUALLY BUSY CENTRE OF AMMAN. FEARING RENEWED FIGHTING, MANY PREFERRED TO STAY HOME - AND A MAJORITY OF BUSINESSES REMAINED CLOSED ON MONDAY MORNING. WITH THE ARMY REPORTED IN CONTROL, GUERRILLA LEADER YASSER ARAFAT IS SAID TO HAVE SENT MESSAGES TO EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT SADAT ASKING FOR ARAB MASS SUPPORT FOR THE PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE FORCES - AND LATE REPORTS FROM CAIRO INDICATE THAT THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT HAS CONDEMNED WHAT THEY TERM THE "NEW MASSACRES" AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS IN JORDAN.

    MEANWHILE, IN IRBID, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND TROOPS DISPLAYED CAPTURED ARMS AND AMMUNITION WHICH HAD BEEN TAKEN FROM THE GUERRILLAS. INCLUDING RUSSIAN, CHINES AND FRENCH-MADE WEAPONS. IRBID HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MAJOR CENTRES OF FIGHTING SINCE THE CIVIL WAR LAST SEPTEMBER BETWEEN KING HUSSEIN'S TROOPS AND THE PALESTINIANS. CASUALTY FIGURES FOR THIS LATEST CLASH ARE CONFLICTING - THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THERE WERE TWENTY DEAD AND TWENTY INJURED; WHILE THE PALESTINIANS CLAIM THERE WERE SEVENTY DEAD AND HUNDREDS INJURED. THE GOVERNOR OF IRBID CALLED IN THE TROOPS AFTER REPORTED ATTACKS ON POLICE STATIONS AND A FIRE IN A GUARD POST AT THE CITY'S HOSPITAL. WHEREAS, IN ARAFAT'S MESSAGE TO CAIRO, HE IS SAID TO HAVE STATED THAT THE ARMY WAS CALLED OUT IN AMMAN AND IRBID "TO CARRY OUR A MASSACRE."
