Background: A major exhibition of French naval power has opened in Paris, including a display of the Exocet missile, the weapon used by the Argentine Air Force to destroy two British vessels during the fighting in the Falklands. The display, which was opened by the French Minister for Defence, Charles Henru, also includes a new missile launcher, the Matra, and a recently developed helicopter designed for the navy, the Dauphin 11. The state owned firm which produces the Exocet missile, Aerospatiale, has plans to increase production following the spectacular successes in the South Atlantic. The Exocet is now one of the most sought after pieces of modern weaponry and the company plans to be producing 25 a month by the start of the next year. It is estimated that more than 2,000 missiles of the Exocet family have been sold to the navies of 26 countries, the current market price being somewhere between 200,000 and 500,000 US dollars each.
