  • Description

The Chilean naval sail training ship Esmeralda was opened to the public in Hong Kong harbour on Saturday (6 May), while on a five-day visit to the British Crown Colony sponsored by the Royal Navy.

The Esmeralda, a four-master Brigantine schooner, is visiting Hong Kong as part of a pacific training cruise. She arrived on Wednesday (3 May) and made a ceremonial entrance to the harbour on Thursday (4 May) during which she was escorted to her berth by Royal Navy minesweepers.

The Chilean ship was opened to the public as part of a charity fair sponsored by a British vessel. A Chilean band, equipped for the occasion with bagpipes, performed during the day's events.

Captained by Capitan De Navio Reul Lopez, the Esmeralda has a crew of 18 officers and 130 ratings. She also carries 64 sub-Lieutenants and 80 trainee sailors.

The ship was built for the Spanish Navy in 1953 and transferred to the Chilean Navy the following year. The Esmeralda last visited Hong Kong in 1966.
