    Fourteen miners are known to have been killed and at least eight more injured, in an accident at a gold-mine near Welcome in South Africa's Orange Free State on Friday (7 October). Eleven of the dead were black miners. With three white men, they were killed when a loaded ore bucket plunged 3,000 feet (about 1,000 metres) down a shaft at the Free State Saaiplaats mine.

    SYNOPSIS: With rescue work still going on at the mine, owned by Anglo-American Corporation, a mine spokesman explained what happened.
