  • Description

British Asians in Uganda are stopping up their preparations to leave as it becomes apparent that President Idi Amin is determined to go ahead with his plan to expel them.

In Kampala, Indian-owned stores are offering goods at special prices as businessmen try to clear their shelves of goods before the November deadline.

Hundreds of Asians from throughout Uganda are queuing at the City Council Health Centre in Kampala to receive vaccinations and others are attending the British High Commission to apply for British passports.

However, there is uncertainty over where the Asians will be allowed to go.

The British government has told airlines and shipping companies not to accept Ugandan Asian passengers who do not hold entry permits; India has said Asians going there from Uganda must have visas; neighbouring Tanzania has said it will not allow them to settle; and Kenya has sealed its border with Uganda.

Its estimated about fifty thousand British Asians are affected by President Amin's expulsion order. Doctors, dentists, and some other professional people are exempted.
