  • Description

A blanket of security covered the departure from Nairobi on Tuesday (26 January) of the deposed President of Uganda, Dr. Milton Obote. While several of his former ministers left from the main entrance of their hotel accompanied by police, Dr. Obote left by the rear entrance. The former President flew to Dar Es Salaam where he was received with special honours by the Tanzanian government.

Dr. Obote, who was deposed by a military coup on Monday, was leaving the Commonwealth Minister's conference in Singapore when the army struck. He flew straight to Nairobi.

In Dar Es Salaam, Dr Obote said in a press conference that he intended to return to Uganda, blaming "foreigners" for taking Uganda's radio and engineering the coup. Uganda's new military leader, Major-General Idi Amin, said that Dr. Obote was free to return whenever he pleased.
