Background: Londoners welcomed back the City's buses on Saturday after a nearly seven weeks-long strike by the busmen for higher pay. And here at one of the capital's busy terminals, outside Victoria Station, the first passengers get aboard the buses again.

Some 8,000 buses and coaches have been off the roads. Although passengers heaved a sign of relief when the familiar red buses were back, few Londoners showed signs of discontent while the strike was on.

Londoners' wartime feeling of solidarity returned. Thousands of motorists gave lifts to people to carry them to and from work. The giant oar lift quickly settled down into routine, with City workers forming orderly queues on the pavements to wait for cars.

Motor bicycles - something of a rarity in Central London - were on the roads. The London Underground Railway was heavily in demand.

Rush hour queues were dense and slow-moving at the Tube stations. To ease the rush to work and rush home, employers brought in a staggered hours' plan to allow workers to travel at off-peak hours.

The strike put a GBP2 million hole in the pocket of the London Transport Corporation. And it cost the busmens' union over GBP1 1/2 million in strike pay.

The strike was settled after a series of impasses during negotiations on the busmens' claim for a 10s 6d a week rise. Finally the men agreed to an 8s 6d rise. To pay for it Londoners fear increases in fares.
