  • Description

THE CITIZENS OF NAM DINH, ABOUT 43 MILES (70 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF HANOI, ARE STILL USING AN UNDERGROUND RESTAURANT WHICH HAS BEEN REBUILT AFTER BEING DESTROYED BY AMERICAN BOMBS IN NOVEMBER 1966. ALTHOUGH THERE'S BEEN NO ESCALATION SINCE LAST APRIL, THE RESTAURANT HAS GROWN INCREASINGLY POPULAR AND BUSINESS WILL CONTINUE INDEFINITELY.

BUILT OF EXTREMELY SOLID MATERIALS TO WITHSTAND THE BOMBING, THE RESTAURANT HAS SANITATION AND VENTILATION TO CATER FOR 100 GUESTS.

IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS IT WAS BOMBED SEVEN TIMES WHILE PEOPLE WERE EATING. NOT ONE PERSON WAS KILLED OR INJURED.

THE TABLES HAVE BEEN ARRANGED INSIDE THE TUNNEL LIKE THOSE IN AN AIR-RAID SHELTER. EACH OF THE TABLES IS SET IN A SIDE CAVE NEXT TO A WELL VENTILATED KITCHEN.
