  • Description

Film-star Vanessa Redgrave failed on Sunday (4 January) at a London meeting of Equity, the actor's union, to persuade her fellow union members to take strike actio against the Government's Industrial Relations Bill. A number of militant groups of British trade unionists plan such strike action on January 12th.

Among stars of the entertainment world who opposed her resolution were singer-comedian Tommy Steele, female impersonator Danny La Rue, and comedian Jimmy Edwards.

Miss Redgrave's motion, moved at a special general meeting of Equity by Corin Redgrave, her brother, was defeated by 974 votes to 229.

She said after the four-hour meeting that she was very disappointed but had no intention of staging a "one-woman" strike.

She said she was only out to protect her union, and described the Conservative Government's Industrial Relations Bill as "industria-blackmail"
Tommy Steele said about the vote: "I am very pleased. This is a rewarding decision. We have shown today that our union is not a platform for extremists".

Britain's Trade Union Congress, while opposing immediate strike action against the Industrial Relations Bill, has launched an eight-week course of nation-wide teach-ins to build up public opposition to it.
