Background: The leaders of three Arab states began summit talks in Algiers on coordinating action against Israel. Algeria's President Houari Boumedienne was at the airport to greet Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, on Thursday (4 May).

The three men will hold talks for three days, before President Sadat goes on to Tunis for discussions with President Habib Bourguiba. Presidents Sadat and Gaddafi have just completed bilateral talks in Alexandria, following the Egyptian leader's visit to Moscow.

Although President Boumedienne has held talks with President Gaddafi several times over the past year, the summit is the first meeting with President Sadat since he become Egyptian head of state 19 months ago.

The tripartite Algiers summit will reveal "the best means of strengthening the war against the common enemy (Israel)," "Algeria's official news agency said.
