Background: IN BRITAIN, THE STOLEN GOYA PORTRAIT OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON WAS RETURNED SAFELY TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) - JUST A FEW WEEK'S BEFORE THE NATION CELEBRATES THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO.

THE PAINTING OF THE IRON DUKE, THE MAN WHO WON THE BATTLE, WAS TAKEN IN A DARING NIGHT ROBBERY FROM THE NATIONAL GALLERY IN AUGUST 1961. A GBP5,000 REWARD WAS OFFERED FOR ITS RECOVERY.

PUBLIC INTEREST WAS FIRST AROUSED THE PREVIOUS MONTH WHEN THE DUCHESS OF LEEDS SOLD IT AT A LONDON AUCTION TO AN AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR (TEXAN OIL MILLIONAIRE CHARLES WRIGHTMAN). OUTCRY AGAINST IT GOING ABROAD LED TO IT BEING BOUGHT BACK BY THE WOLFSON FOUNDATION AND THE GOVERNMENT FOR GBP140,000 AND IT WAS PUT ON SHOW AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY.

THE NATIONAL GALLERY WOULD NOT ALLOW IT TO BE FILMED TODAY. A SPOKESMAN SAID IT APPEARED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION BUT WOULD NOT BE EXHIBITED UNTIL IT HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO EXPERT EXAMINATION.

THE POLICE RECOVERED THE PORTRAIT DURING THE NIGHT FROM THE LEFT LUGGAGE OFFICE OF A BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY STATION. FOR 17 DAYS, WRAPPED UP IN BROWN PAPER, WOOD SHAVINGS AND HESSIEN, IT HAD LAIN, AMONG SUITCASES, HAMPERS AND BOXES OF CHICKENS.

RAILWAYS OFFICIALS RECOLLECTED IT HAD BEEN HANDED IN BY A TALL MAN IN HIS TWENTIES WHO HAD PAID ONE SHILLING TO DEPOSIT IT THERE. NOBODY CLAIMED IT TILL TODAY - WHEN THE DEPOSIT TICKET ARRIVED IN A LETTER TO A LONDON NEWSPAPER, AND THE EDITOR TOLD THE POLICE.

SINCE ITS THEFT, ANONYMOUS RANSOM LETTERS, BARGAINING FOR ITS RETURN, WERE SENT TO LONDON NEWSPAPERS AND NEWS AGENCIES. EACH TIME THE AMOUNT OF RANSOM DEMANDED WAS REDUCED. ONE OF THE MOST RECENT ASKED SIMPLY FOR A PARDON FOR THE THIEF IF IT WERE RETURNED.
