  • Description

THE DEATH TOLL IS STILL BEING COUNTED IN SOUTHERN INDIA AND CEYLON, HIT BY A CYCLONE ON WEDNESDAY. THE ACCOMPANYING TIDAL WAVE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE KILLED ALL 300 INHABITANTS OF ONE VILLAGE AND FIRST OFFICIAL ESTIMATES SAY THAT 500 DIED IN SOUTH INDIA AND 350 IN CEYLON. BUT THERE ARE REPORTS OF 1,500 BODIES BEING FOUND ON THE SOUTH INDIAN SHORE.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE TIDAL WAVE INCLUDED THE DESTRUCTION OF SEVERAL RAILWAY LINES, ONE OF THEM AT PALAPATTI. AN EXPRESS TRAIN ON THIS LINE AT NIGHT WAS DERAILED BY THE DAMAGED TRACKS. FOUR DIED IN THE CRASH AND MANY MORE WERE INJURED.

WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN ARRIVED ON THE SCENE THE RAIL HAD BEEN RESTORED AFTER NON-STOP WORK BY RAILWAY GANGS SINCE THE CRASH. RESTORING THE RAIL-LINKS IS NOW A VITAL TASK IN THE AREA HIT BY THE CYCLONE, SINCE A VAST AMOUNT OF EMERGENCY RATIONS WILL BE TAKEN BY RAIL TO THE WORST HIT AREAS.
