    Background: GIZA, EGYPT

Two couples from Texas took part in what has become almost a national sport in Egypt - camel racing. The first Cairo Cup race was broadcast live to the United States and the couples were fixed up with a radio link to Texans at home. The callers asked questions as the contestants actually participated in the race. The precarious pastime left the competitors breathless. Both couples had won a competition in the US describing in poems why they wanted to compete. Linda Poole and Wallis Wembish beat their compatriots, Gloria and Jake Scherer to the finishing line. They received a trophy from the organisers of the race which was sponsored by an American soft drink company.
