  • Description

The Provincial Minister responsible for construction for the Montreal Olympic Games in Canada, Victor Goldbloom, says if work proceeds at its current pace, the main stadium should have its full planned complement of 56,000 seats in time for the Games opening in July.

Newsmen toured the site on Monday (15 March) and they were told that another 5,000 temporary seats and standing room for 12,000 people would be available.

Meanwhile, work continues 24 hours a day and Dr. Goldbloom says it will not be slowed down following the deaths of four stadium workmen last week.

The floor of the stadium must be cleared of equipment by 6 April, to allow the installation of the track and field, but cranes and other heavy machinery will be able to continue operating for another two to three weeks in the border between the track and the stands.

Construction is to stop for three days over Easter and the stadium, swimming hall and velodrome will be opened to Olympic Park construction workers for tours on Good Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the public will be allowed to tour the site for the first time since building began two years ago. Work has been hampered in the last year by strikes, freezing temperatures, money shortages and allegations of fraud and corruption.

The stadium has been the major headache for the organisers. The velodrome has all its 7,000 seats in place and the wooden, steeply banked track for the racing cyclists is laid.

In the swimming arena, the diving pool is ready for its water test to check seepage. The main pool will have its water check later this month and all four pools will be tiled and ready for handing over by 22 May.
