    BOTH TEAMS SHOWED TRACES OF NERVOUSNESS IN THE EARLY STAGES. BUT ONCE THE JAPANESE SETTLED DOWN THERE WAS NO DOUBT ABOUT THEIR SUPERIORITY. JAPAN LED 31-22 AT HALF TIME.

    THE JAPANESE WON ALL FIVE MATCHES, BEATING MALAYSIA 77-55; THE PHILIPPINES 71-65; THAILAND 65-60 AND SOUTH KOREA 69-63.

    THE KOREANS STORMED INTO THE ATTACK ON THE RESUMPTION. STRIVING DESPERATELY IN DEFENCE, THEY CONTINUOUSLY MADE MISTAKES. THEIR TOP SCORERS WERE KIM YOUNG KIM (29 POINTS) AND SIM DONG PA (10 POINTS).

    TOP SCORERS FOR JAPAN WERE KATSUJI TSUNODA (17), AKIRA KODAMA (16) AND KUNIHIKO NAKAMURA (15). IN THEIR MOMENT OF TRIUMPH, THE JUBILANT JAPANESE TOSSED THEIR MANAGER, MR TADASHI MUIRA AND COACH TAKASHI ITOYAMA, SEVERAL TIMES IN THE AIR.
