    Supporters of Cesar Chavez, leader of the United Farm Workers' Union, protested outside the courthouse in Salinas, California where he was sentenced to imprisonment on Saturday (December 5). Chavez had refused to order his supporters to stop a lettuce boycott and he issued a statement saying the boycott should continue even though he will remain in jail for contempt of court unless it stops.

    The Union had organised a boycott of the lettuce growers and Chavez deliberately violated a court restraining order to stop the campaign. Chavez had only been jailed once before in his union career, that time only overnight.

    But now his supporters say they will carry out his wish and continue the boycott for higher wages no matter how long he is in jail.
