    Background: FUKYUYAMA CITY, HIROSHIMA PREFECTURE

A United States Catholic priest who blessed the mission which dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima in 1945 is visiting Japan on what he terms a "pilgrimage of atonement". Father George Zabelka from Michigan, USA, was based on Tinian Island in the South Pacific during the Second World War and was chaplain to the crew of the B-29 bomber "Enola Gay" which was sent on the Hiroshima mission on August 6, 1945. Father Zabelka visited the bombed city soon after the attack and was horrified by what he saw. He became committed to pacifism and fifteen years ago began actively campaigning for peace. Now aged 69, Father Zabelka is visiting Japan to take part in a mass peace walk which began in Fukyuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, on July 29. The six-day peace crusade will end in Hiroshima in time for the 39th anniversary of the bombing. Father Zabelka will also visit Nagasaki in southwest Japan where a second atom bomb was dropped on August 9, 1945. The two bombs killed at least 200,000 people. The priest said he plans to ask forgiveness from the survivors in both cities "For the evil perpetrated on innocent civilians". He said he wants "forgiveness for myself, the Church, and all of us who were in some way responsible".
