For some French trainee paratroops it was a more relaxed weekend than usual. News of their persistent ill-treatment by officers and N.C.O'S became public and some arrests have been made. The trainees now know that they are safe.
But for others it was a busy week-end, when some 900 of them from the #rd Parachute Regiment were dropped around La Courtine in Clermont-Ferrand as part of the "attacking Red Army" in continuing French Army autumn exercises.
Armoured forces and infantry of the "defending Blue Army" moved in from surrounding areas through organized ambushes to clear them out under the interested gaze of NATO officers and the well guarded French President, Charles de Gaulle. The parachute drop, supposedly taking place at night, was made during the afternoon so that it could be seen by the high-ranking onlookers.
De Gaulle arrived on October 14th to watch the closing stages of the exercises in spite of cold weather and political preoccupations. Ahead of him arrived reinforcements of security men, bringing the total in the area to guard his life up to 4,200."
Earlier in the month De Gaulle watched manoeuvres in the Rheims area and has since visited the French Navy.
