  • Description

POLICEMAN CLASHED WITH HOOTING, JEERING SPECTATORS DURING A HEARING OF THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES IN WASHINGTON ON THURSDAY INVESTIGATING THE VISIT OF UNITED STATES STUDENTS TO CUBA THIS SUMMER.

UNIFORMED POLICEMEN AND PLAINCLOTHES DETECTIVES DRAGGED THE HECKLERS, SOME OF WHOM WERE STRUGGLING AND KICKING, FROM THE CROWDED HEARING ROOM.

THE DISTURBANCE WAS SPARKED OFF BY THE TESTIMONY OF 26-YEAR-OLD BARRY HOFFMAN, A VOLUNTARY "UNDERCOVER AGENT" WHO ACCOMPANIED THE 59 STUDENTS WHO DEFIED A STATE DEPARTMENT BAN TO VISIT CUBA.

MR. HOFFMAN TOLD THE COMMITTEE THE NAMES OF MANY OF THE STUDENTS AND WHAT ROLES THEY PLAYED. CHEERS AND APPLAUSE BROKE OUT LATER, WHEN THE NEXT WITNESS, LEVI LAUB, CALLED MR. HOFFMAN "A RAT" FOR GIVING THE NAMES.

WHEN THE APPLAUSE AND SHOUTING DID NOT DIE DOWN, THE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, MR. EDWIN WILLIS ORDERED POLICE TO REMOVE NOISY SPECTATORS. THE OFFICERS MOVED IN, SOME YOUTHS FOUGHT BACK, AND OTHERS HOOTED. THE SCUFFLE SPREAD, AND SUDDENLY TWENTY OTHER POLICEMEN WHO HAD BEEN WAITING IN THE NEXT ROOM MOVED IN TO HELP THEIR COLLEAGUES. AS THE TROUBLEMAKERS WERE RUSHED TO THE DOOR, THERE WERE SHOUTS OF "POLICE BRUTALITY" AND "ITS LIKE NAZI GERMANY."
