    TODAY, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 11, THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE HAVE BEEN COMMEMORATING ARMISTICE DAY -- THE DAY SET APART IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE MEN WHO DIED IN WAR. IT WAS THE FIRST NOVEMBER 11 SINCE 1939 THAT FRENCH FORCES HAD NOT BEEN ENGAGED IN A WAR SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD.

    IN PARIS, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE LAID A WREATH ON THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER AT THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE. AFTER THE CEREMONY, THE PRESIDENT DROVE DOWN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES AVENUE TO LAY A SECOND WREATH AT THE STATE OF M. GEORGES CLEMENCEAU, FRENCH PRIME MINISTER DURING THE 1914-18 WAR.

    DESPITE THE COLD WIND AND RAIN, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, WEARING ARMY GENERAL UNIFORM, DROVE IN AN OPEN CAR. THE PRIME MINISTER, M. GEORGES POMPIDOU, WAS SEATED BESIDE HIM.

    THE ARMISTICE MARKING THE END OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR WAS SIGNED ON NOVEMBER 11, 1914, AND IS HONOURED BY FRANCE AND MANY OF HER WARTIME ALLIES AS A DAY OF MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED IN WAR.
