  • Description

With Marshal Lon Nol assured of an outright victory in the Khmer Republic's Presidential election, senior officials led by Mr. Oung Hieam not in Phnom Penh on Tuesday (June 6) to prepare for his five-year term of office.

In provisional figures for Sunday's election, Marshal Lon Nol won 59 per cent of the vote, more than twice as many as his nearest opponent, Mr. In Team, a former Deputy Prime Minister, who took 24 per cont of the vote. The other 17 per cent went to Professor Keo An, who had campaigned for Prince Sihanouk, the deposed head of state, to be allowed to return from exile in Peking as a private citizen.

Less than a million votes were cast in the election, representing only half of eligible voters. The figure was far below the 1.6 million cast in the constitutional referendum last april.

Mr. In Tam and Professor Keo An have threatened to file protests alleging election fraud, but this is not likely to affect the now term of power promised to 58-year-old Marshal Lon Nol, who has run the country since the overthrow of Prince Sihanouk's monarchic regime in March, 1970.
