    TWO AIRCRAFT IN THE LONDON-TO-SYDNEY AIR RACE WERE REPORTED OVERDUE AT ATHENS TODAY (FRIDAY) AS ABOUT 50 ENTRANTS PASSED THROUGH THE CONTROL POINT THERE AFTER THE FIRST LEG OF THE GRUELLING 12,000-MILE (19,000 KMS) EVENT. THE FIRST ARRIVALS WERE BRITISH PILOTS W. J. BRIGHT AND F. BUXTON, IN A TWIN-ENGINED BRITTEN-NORMAN BN-2A ISLANDER AIRCRAFT.

    THE AIRCRAFT WHICH HAVE FAILED TO ARRIVE AS SCHEDULED ARE AN AUSTRALIAN-PILOTED ENTRY AND A BRITISH-PILOTED CRAFT. THE FIRST, AN AERO SHRIKE COMMANDER 500S, PILOTED BY B. FERNER AND K. I. DODD, HAD NOT BEEN CHECKED INTO THE COUNTRY. THE SECOND, A SIAI-MARCHETTI SF-260, FLOWN BY J. T. KINGSLEY, P. R. EVANS AND A. GIBSON HAD NOT BEEN HEARD FROM AFTER LEAVING PISA FOR ATHENS.

    THE WEATHER IN ATHENS WAS CLOUDY AS THE FIRST AIRCRAFT IN THE GBP50,000 STERLING MARATHON RACE BEGAN ARRIVING AT THEIR FIRST CONTROL POINT AFTER LEAVING BRITAIN.

    AFTER REFUELLING, SOME AIRCRAFT WERE DELAYED BY THE WEATHER BEFORE TAKING OFF ON THE NEXT LEG TO BAHRAIN AND KARACHI.

    SOME OF THE EARLY ARRIVALS WERE THE HONOURABLE HUGH ASTOR, WITH SIR WILLIAM DUGDALE AND PILOT MR. M. JANKIEWICZ ALSO IN A BRITTEN-NORMAN ISLANDER, NEW SOUTH WALES ENTRANTS J. L. DALEY AND J. R. COLWELL, IN A PIPER ARROW, AND TWO OTHER AUSTRALIAN ENTRANTS, MRS. M. KENTLEY AND HER SON PETER IN A MOONEY 21.

    THE RACE IS BEING HELD TO COMMEMORATE THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF AUSTRALIA BY EXPLORER CAPTAIN JAMES COOK.
