    The United States Agency for International Development (AID) has given $84,500 (GBP42,000) to the Ivory Coast Economic and Social Research Centre to finance five development projects in the next three years.

    The agreement was signed int eh Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan on Wednesday (14 January) by the United States Ambassador, Mr. Robert Smith, and Mr. Jean Loroughnon Guede, Minister for Scientific Research.

    The subsidy is to be used for research on the rural economy and for training Ivorian economists for work in research. The specific projects include the development of North and Central Ivory coast, the study of agricultural technology, particularly production systems, and the commercialisation of agricultural projects.

    In his speech at the signing of the agreement, Mr. Smith said he was keen to retain contact between scientific development sin the United States and in the Ivory Coast.
