  • Description

PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) CALLED FOR TOTAL ERADICATION OF OLD HABITS WHICH ENCOURAGED "MASTER AND SERVANT" ATTITUDES AMONG TANZANIANS. THE PRESIDENT WAS SPEAKING AT THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF A GBP30,000 STERLING HEALTH CENTRE - THE NORDIC CENTRE - BUILT WITH SCANDINAVIAN AID AT KIBAHA, 12 MILES (19 KILOMETRES) FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM.

THE TANZANIAN PRESIDENT SAID THAT HABITS SUCH AS HE HAD REFERRED TO WERE CHARACTERISTIC OF EMERGENT NATIONS. HE REFERRED TO THE TIME WHEN TANZANIANS WERE FIGHTING FOR INDEPENDENCE AND SAID MANY OF THE LEADERS HAD THE IDEA THAT THEY WOULD ENJOY PRIVILEGES THAN ENJOYED BY EUROPEANS.

PRESIDENT NYERERE SAID THIS ATTITUDE WAS NOT PECULIAR TO TANZANIA, BUT WAS COMMON TO ALL DOMINATED PEOPLES, TO IMITATE WHAT THE MASTERS DID.

THE PRESIDENT WAS GREETED AT THE CENTRE BY THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER OF THE CENTRE, DR. J. KORN, AND HE ADDRESSED CHILDREN BEGINNING THEIR STUDIES THERE.

THE CENTRE INCLUDES AND OUT-PATIENT CLINIC, A MOTHER AND CHILD CLINIC AND WARDS TO ACCOMMODATE 540 BOARDING PUPILS. CONSTRUCTION OF THE SCHOOL IN JUNE 1964 AND THE FIRST GROUP OF STUDENTS MOVED IN DURING MARCH 1965.

WITH COMPLETION OF THE DORMITORY BUILDING PROGRAMME, THE SCHOOL WILL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO ACCOMMODATE 540 BOARDING PUPILS.
