    An "Allweather unsinkable, self-righting lifeboat belonging to the Societe Nationale De Sauvetage En Mer - the National Society of Lifesaving in France - went into service at Port Bloc near Bordeaux on Friday (May 7).

    The boat is equipped with radar, the latest radio equipment and echo sounding equipment. Port Bloc, the first station to get the new type craft, is one of 51 lifeboat stations already equipped with "Allweather" boats. This, however, is the latest model.

    The boat is powered by two engines, each generating 225 horse-power and capable of a top speed of 14 knots. The operating range is 160 miles (256 kms). (Cost of each craft is approximately one million Francs (76,000 sterling).
