  • Description

ABOUT 3,000 BUILDING WORKERS MARCHED THROUGH ROME YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN SUPPORT OF THEIR DEMANDS FOR MORE PAY AND A FIVE-DAY WEEK. THE ROME DEMONSTRATION WAS THE PRELUDE TO TODAY'S NATION-WIDE STRIKE OF 900,000 CONSTRUCTION WORKERS, CLIMAXING THE AUTUMN WAVE OF LABOUR UNREST IN ITALY.

THE DEMONSTRATION IN THE OLD CITY OF THE CAPITAL PASSED OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT -- THOUGH THE MARCHERS HELD UP TRAFFIC FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. COMMUNIST UNION LEADER STELVIO RAVIZZA ADDRESSED THE WORKERS DENOUNCING THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT FOR ITS LABOUR POLICIES.

AT THE SAME TIME, SOME 40,000 CEMENT WORKERS THROUGHOUT ITALY STARTED A 48-HOUR STRIKE. THEY WERE LATER JOINED BY 55,000 BRICK-MAKERS ON A 72-HOUR STOPPAGE.

TODAY, WORK ON THOUSANDS OF BUILDINGS SITES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY GROUND TO A HALT AS THE COUNTY'S 900,000 CONSTRUCTION WORKERS HELD A 24-HOUR STRIKE.

ALTOGETHER, ABOUT TWO AND A HALF MILLION WORKERS ARE EXPECTED TO STRIKE IN ITALY THIS WEEK -- AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE HAVE THREATENED TO FOLLOW SUIT. METAL WORKERS, TRANSPORT EMPLOYEES, RUBBER WORKERS AND EVEN GRAVE DIGGERS ARE AMONG THE STRIKERS.
