    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE OF TANZANIA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ATTENDED A MILITARY PARADE IN ZANZIBAR MARKING THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE OVERTHROW OF THE ZANZIBAR SULTANATE BY THE AFRO-SHIRAZI PARTY. PRESIDENT NYERERE SAT ON THE REVIEWING STAND BETWEEN THE LEADERS OF THE PARTY, VICE-PRESIDENT KARUME, AND HIS WIFE.

    LATER, PRESIDENT NYERERE WAS TO TELL A LARGE CROWD THAT THE TRANSITION FROM MUD HUTS TO HOUSES WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE REVOLUTION WHICH OVERTHREW THE ZANZIBAR SULTANATE. HE SAID THAT THE JANUARY 1964 REVOLUTION HAD BEEN THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS SOCIAL REFORM. " THE REFORMS MUST CONTINUE," SAID PRESIDENT NYERERE," UNTIL WE ARE A FULL SOCIALIST STATE." HE SAID THE GOALS HAD TO BE ATTAINED THROUGH SWEAT. THE REFORMS MUST BE CARRIED OUT BY THE TANZANIANS THEMSELVES. "WE CAN BE HELPED, BUT WE MUST NOT BANK ON IT," SAID THE PRESIDENT. "RELYING ON FOREIGN AID IS BEING HALF INDEPENDENT".

    A LARGE CROWD WATCHED THE PARADE OF MEN AND MILITARY VEHICLES. ON SHOW WERE A LARGE NUMBER OF WEAPONS WHICH HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO TANZANIA BY THE SOVIET UNION AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. THEY INCLUDED MACHINE GUNS MOUNTED ON ARMOURED CARS, ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS, AND FILED GUNS. OBSERVERS FROM A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES - INCLUDING CUBA, THE SOVIET UNION, EAST GERMANY AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA - ATTENDED THE PARADE.

    THE PARADE AND FESTIVITIES MARKING REVOLUTION DAY WERE POSTPONED FROM JANUARY 12 UNTIL AFTER THE MOSLEM FAST MONTH OF RAMADAN.
