  • Description

With a new general election less than two months away in Argentina, former President Juan Peron still has not disclosed who will run as his Vice Presidential candidate. Fresh speculation began on Tuesday (July 31st) when he met with Senior Ricardo Balbin, leader of the opposition Radical Party.

Although Senior Balbin was jailed by the Peronist Regime when the General was last in power, he is widely believed to be the likeliest choice as General Peron's running mats.

Senior Balbin was a runner-up in the March general elections, in which former President Hector Campora, General Peron political protege, polled almost 50 percent of the popular votes.

After his meeting with the General, Senior Balbin told reporters they talked on "matters concerning the country and the joint effort that has to be made to make it forge ahead." He said there had been no mention of the possibility that he would be the Vice Presidential candidate.

The elections on September 23rd are expected to return the 77-year-old Peron to office without serious opposition.

SYNOPSIS: With a new general election less than a month away in Argentina, former President Juan Peron has not named a Vice Presidential running mate.

Speculation settled on Senior Ricardo Balbin after he spent an hour at General Peron's suburban villa on Tuesday, although Senior Balbin was Jailed when the General was last in power.

Senior Balbin said they talked about "matters concerning the country and the joint effort that has to be made to make ti forge ahead." He denied there had been any discussion as to his becoming the vice presidential candidate. Senior Balbin, leader of the opposition Radical Party, was a runner-up in the March general election.

Observers believe there is little doubt the election on September 23rd will return the 77-year-old General Peron to the office of President with a comfortable, and quite possibly, an overwhelming majority.
