Background: A six storey office block in the centre of the town of Bilbao in Spain was extensively damaged by a bomb blast on Monday (June 12).
SYNOPSIS:The bomb wrecked the offices of the state social security system in the Northern Spanish town.
Five minutes before the blast, an anonymous phonecall warned of the bomb and about five hundred people evacuated the building. The bomb was an incendiary device, planted in a lift shaft and most damage was confined to the basement. The only casualties were two women office clerks who were injured when they jumped out of a first floor window.
No-one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but it came on the same day as demonstrations took place in the nearby town of Tol???sa to mark the 10th anniversary of the first Basque separatist guerrilla killed in a gunbattle with police. Two people were shot and wounded in the demonstrations, early on Monday morning as riot police moved in to disperse the demonstrators. The disturbances started on Sunday when demonstrators blocked roads and the railway line to France with cars and trees. Police said shots were fired from a balcony-as they pursued a group of young demonstrators in the street. One of those injured in the shooting was a 14-year-old gir???
