Background: There was a great rush for tickets in amman, Aug 14, when the world's first organised camel racing event was held under the auspices of the Royal Racing Club of Jordan.
Races were run over 1,600, 1,800 and 2,000 metres. Winning positions showed female camels to be faster than males. At these distances, came.s are still slower than horses - it is only over 35, 000 metres on hard desert surfaces that camels prove superior due to their greater endurance.
Like horses, camels live 25 years, but they reach their peak from between the ages of three and five. In the Amman event, the racing camels were ridden by their owners as there are yet no professional camel jockeys. Racing is conducted on a winner-take-all basis, the purse being about GBP40. Betting support proved quite a strong for camels as for horses.
