Background: Tennis, and the men's singles of the French Open Championships in Paris lost former Wimbledon champion stan smith of the United States on Tuesday (31 May) when he was crushed 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 by Guillermo Vilas of argentina.
SYNOPSIS: The scoreline of this fourth round match showed all too clearly that even on his service games Smith couldn't break through.
But it wasn't always the skill of Vilas that took the points -- quite often Smith let himself down with his own mistakes.
However, Vilas, didn't take all the points, even in his service games.
Vilas demolished the 11th seeded Smith with his punishing returns.
The Argentinian was obviously determined to improve on his performance in the italian championships earlier in May, when he crashed out in the second round.
With Vilas to serve at match point, it was all over for smith -- but the 1972 Wimbledon champion went down fighting as best he could.
At the end, some of the crowd rushed onto the court to congratulate the Argentinian.
The final score -- 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. Vilas went through to the quarter finals to face Wojtek Fibak of Poland, who's seeded 10th.
