  • Description

A group of young in Holland spent Christmas Day in their own style at a Church in the Hague. Instead of carols there was community singing and pop music.

The church called the Kloosterkerk, is open 24-hours a day and is a meeting place for many young people in the city -- what older people would call hippies. Many of these at the church are "Kabouters" -- members of an unconventional youth movement in Holland who have dubbed themselves "the gnomes." Some of the Kabouters have already been elected to city councils in Holland.

The Dutch authorities take a tolerant view of soft drugs in places like this church although a drug emergency squad is on constant stand by in the city. While their parents are likely to be at home drinking, their children are quietly smoking pot in the club.

An unconventional way to spend Christmas, but one some five hundred young people in Holland prefer.
