  • Description

The highest ranking layman in the Roman Catholic Church, the Grand Master of the Order of Malta Prince Fra Angelo De Mojana, arrived in the Ivory Coast on Saturday (11 June) to open a district clinic in the north of the country. The clinic was paid for and built by the Order.

SYNOPSIS: The visit to the Ivory Coast was the first by a Grand Master, of the charitable Order, which carries out extensive hospital work on the African continent.

President Felix Houphouet-Biogny personally greeted the Grand Master, who was accompanied by 10 top-ranking members of the Order on the four-day visit. The Order has 8,000 members. It is based in Rome, where it is recognised as a Sovereign state, and has full diplomatic relations with 37 countries including the Ivory Coast. It was formed in 1099 to look after pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, but today it runs hospitals, research institutes, clinics, children's homes and ambulance services throughout the world. It was to officially open a fully-equipped clinic in remote northern Ivory Coast that Prince Fra Angelo came to the country. The warmth of the welcome given the Prince in Abidjan is a measure of the gratitude for the work done by his organisation.
