  • Description

In Jerusalem on Friday (4 May), one hundred soldiers were presented with letters of commendation by the Israeli President, Zalman Shazar. The soldiers, both men and women were chosen as outstanding to receive the commendations as part of the celebrations surrounding the 25 the Anniversary of Israel.

President Shazar received the soldiers, from all ranks and various units, at his Jerusalem home where he was accompanied by the Israeli Army Chief of Staff, General David Elazar.

Before the presentation ceremony, President Shazar and General Elazar reviews a military guard of honour outside the residence. The presentation is a continuation of the predominantly military nature of the Israeli anniversary celebrations. The biggest event of the Anniversary was scheduled for the following Monday ... an armed forces parade through Jerusalem by some two thousand soldiers, sailors and airmen. Armoured vehicles were to take part in the parade and several hundred aircraft were to participate in a fly-past.

SYNOPSIS: President Shazar presented the commendations which he had earlier signed personally.

The "outstanding" soldiers included a woman lieutenant serving with the army. The biggest celebrations of the anniversary are also to be held in Jerusalem... a massive military parade. The parade has come in for criticism on several grounds....domestically, because of the heavy financial cost; and internationally, because part of the rout is through East Jerusalem which Israel captured from Jordan in 1967.
