  • Description

THREE MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS - TWO DOCTORS AND A PRIEST - WERE FLOWN OUT OF LAGOS ON SUNDAY (NOVEMBER 19) FOLLOWING A CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT BETWEEN FEDERAL TROOPS AND SECESSION-1ST BIAFRA.

THE CEASEFIRE, ARRANGED BY THE SWISS EMBASSY WITH THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL AUTHORITIES, AFFECTED THE PORT HARCOURT AREA IN BIAFRA WHICH HAD BEEN UNDER CONSTANT BOMBING ATTACKS FROM THE NIGERIAN AIR FORCE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS.

THE AIRCRAFT, A DC-4 OF THE SWISS BALAIR COMPANY, WAS CARRYING DOCTORS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR A RED CROSS HOSPITAL AT ACHI, 30 MILES (48 KILOMETRES) SOUTHWEST OF THE FORMER BIAFRAN CAPITAL OF ENUGU - NOW IN FEDERAL HANDS.

AFTER MAKING TWO TRIPS FROM THE OFFSHORE ISLAND OF FERNANDO PO TO THE ACHI HOSPITAL, THE AIRCRAFT FLEW OUT WITH THE RED CROSS MEMBERS BEFORE THE CEASEFIRE EXPIRED.

MR. GEORGE HOFFMAN, DELEGATE-GENERAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS IN AFRICA, PRAISED THE FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT FOR ALLOWING THE SUPPLIES TO GO INTO THE EAST.
