  • Description

The Trans-Atlantic Trophy, contested by top motorcyclists from Britain and the United States, was retained by Britain on Monday (16 April). But the home riders didn't have it all their own way before a partizan crowd at the Midlands Oulton Park course.

In the first race of the day, Londoner Barry Sheene had broken the lap record with a speed of 98.41 miles an hour -- that's about one mile an hour faster than the existing record.

During the last race of the day, featured in this coverage, Sheene came up against the United Stated national champion, 21-year-old Kenny Roberts.

The result was a convincing victory for the Californian Roberts, with Sheene following him in second place. Though Roberts failed to break Sheene's new lap record, he proved himself the top points scorer during this year's six race Trans-Atlantic series.

Despite his efforts, the English riders took the overall championship by 415 points to 401.
